The trail starts at the Mt. Woodson Golf Club right next to Archie Moore Road. It follows the golf course for a while and then very briefly parallels the road. After a third of a mile, you hike up alongside a residential area on the right. This part of the trail provides a decent amount of shade that makes this into a fun hike even when it's hot. After you leave the residential area behind, the trail gently hugs the northern slope of Mt. Woodson and does not change much in elevation. You occasionally get a nice view to the north. After 1.5 miles, the trail starts ascending more steadily and becomes more exposed while also offering better views. At two miles, the Old Fry Koegel Trail is to the left up a set of steps. Continue straight ahead and reach Mt. Woodson Road Trail at 2.7 miles.
