Privacy Policy

This is the plain-language privacy baseline for the Trails beta. It explains what we store, why we store it, and which pieces stay optional.

Quick summary

What we keep

Account basics, favorites, completed trails, unit preference, and an optional saved home location.

What stays optional

Browser location access and saving your home map coordinates are both optional features.

Third parties

The site loads map and UI assets from outside providers and may link out to original trail sources.

What we collect

When you create an account, Trails stores your username, email address, and a hashed password. If you use account features, Trails also stores your favorite trails, marked completions, preferred unit system, and your last sign-in time.

If you choose to save a home location while signed in, Trails stores the latitude and longitude you submit for that home map view.

Trails also keeps aggregate operational data for the ad system, such as campaign impression and click counts. Those counters help the site manage beta sponsorship placements, but they are not stored as a per-user activity history in the current app.

How we use it

  • To create and secure your account.
  • To remember saved trails, completion history, and measurement units.
  • To let you reopen the map near a saved home area if you choose to set one.
  • To operate, troubleshoot, and improve the beta.

Location and map data

If you tap a browser control like “Use my location,” your browser may share a current location with the site after you grant permission. That real-time lookup is optional.

Trails only keeps location coordinates long term when you explicitly save a home location to your account. If you do not save it, the app can still center the map in the moment without permanently attaching that location to your profile.

Sharing and third parties

Trails may load scripts, styles, fonts, or map assets from third-party providers that power the interface. Those providers can receive normal web request details such as your IP address, browser information, and the page requesting the asset.

The app also links to original trail sources and external destinations when available. Once you leave Trails, the privacy practices of those sites control what happens next.

Your choices

You can update your email address, unit preference, and saved home location from your account. You can also stop using the optional saved-trail features at any time.

For privacy questions or account-data removal requests, contact the site operator directly through the support channel provided for this beta.

Changes to this policy

Because Trails is still in beta, the product and this policy may change as features expand. When the handling of account or location data changes in a material way, this page should be updated alongside the product.
