Philosopher's Way Trail

Overview

John McLaren Park has gone through a revitalization in recent years but remains one of the lesser-known recreation areas in San Francisco. A hilltop park accessible by MUNI bus or car, the space is often deserted with the exception of the occasional dog walker. The park also features excellent views of downtown San Francisco, the Bay, San Bruno Mountain, and the Excelsior District.

The Philosopher's Way Trail loops around the park and has been long used by mountain bikers. Most parts are used by pedestrians while others are more obviously intended for bikes. The southern part of the trail is split along the hillside with numerous options, including a small pump track above the water tanks. It is recommended to ride the trail in a clockwise direction.

The trail is maintained, but parts can become more overgrown at times.
