Old Pedro Mountain Road

Overview

This road winds its way along ridge lines with gradual climbs between the towns of Pacifica and Montara. Prior to the completion of State Highway 1, in 1937, it carried vehicle traffic between the two towns but some didn't make it and several wrecks can be seen in gullies along the route. Now it's only open to hikers, cyclists, and horses as it traverses Montara State Beach and McNee Ranch State Park.

Also referred to as "Old" Pedro Mountain Road, from Pacifica it starts at the end of Higgins Way in the Linda Mar neighborhood. The surface is partially paved, mostly broken, with some sections washed out and narrowed. There are some nice coastal views from the ridge-top "Saddle Pass" when it's not foggy.

This road connects with the North Peak Access Road for the steep climb to Montara Mountain.

In Montara, the road dead-ends at a fence where a residential street begins. Take the Farallone Cutoff for a more direct route to Montara State Beach and Hwy 1.
