Bernal Hill Trail starts from Mine Trail in the Santa Teresa Hills, on the western side of Santa Teresa County Park. At first it goes through a shaded section, but soon emerges onto the grass covered Santa Teresa Hills. The trail begins by going around a stream source. One can look down into the stream valley to the right of the trail. To the southeast, the Santa Cruz Mountains can be seen in the distance.

About .5 miles from its trailhead, Bernal Hill Trail makes a sharp bend to the left, leaving the stream valley behind, as it crosses a grass covered ridge top to continue along the other side of the ridge, with another valley below, to the right of the trail. The trail goes around the end of this valley also, and meets Joice Trail. Bernal Hill Trail ends here, at its intersection with the Joice Trail.
