From Old Haul Road, the Butano Ridge Trail climbs through redwood forest to Butano Ridge Fire Road. Despite being second-growth, the forest is surprisingly lush and dense. At 0.8 miles, you pass the intersection with the Portola Trail on your left. Continue climbing for another 1.5 miles until you reach the intersection with the Basin Trail Easement, again on your left. From there, the Butano Ridge Trail turns northwest, passing by some rock formations before ending at the Butano Ridge Fire Road.
