This trail extends from Arroyo Picnic Area along Tilden Regional Park's South Park Drive up the hillside to the summit area of Vollmer Peak. The lower segment of this trail is wide and open to bicycles, and it climbs the canyon close to the route of South Park Drive. Lupine Trail intersects about 0.2 miles from the bottom. <br><br>About 0.5 miles above the Lupine Trail junction, a connector trail descends to South Park Drive. Above this point, this trail narrows, and bicycles are prohibited. <br><br>This trail ascends an additional 0.2 miles, past the park's maintenance yard and the Regional Parks' Fire Station 1, to reach a junction. A connector trail goes south to the Upper Steam Trains (unpaved) parking lot. This trail turns left and contours along the flank of the peak, providing excellent views of much of Tilden Regional Park and San Francisco Bay. <br><br>In 0.3 miles, a junction is reached with a connector trail descending along the ridge to the northwest, intersecting Lupine Trail a few feet down. This trail turns sharply right and climbs along the ridge to the summit area. <br><br>Note: There is limited free parking at Arroyo Picnic Area. However, South Park Drive is closed between November 1 and March 31 each year, making Arroyo Picnic Area inaccessible to motor vehicles. There is also free parking in the Steam Trains lots.
