Montevina Ridge Trail

Overview

The Montevina Ridge Trail provides a short hike along the ridge line in El Sereno Open Space Preserve. To access the trail, take CA Highway 17 until you get to the Bear Creek Road exit, and then follow Montevina Road until the end of the road. There is a small parking area for four to five cars. Hike uphill past the gate and enter the preserve.

If you look behind you, homes perch on the mountain tops can be seen outside of the preserve. Views of the mountains and the Lexington Reservoir stretch out before you. Continuing along the trail, you come to a split at roughly 0.2 miles, where the Aquinas Trail climbs off to the right while the Montevina Ridge Trail goes off to the left.

The trail meanders through a chaparral landscape with few large trees and little shade. Make sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, or a hat if hiking in the middle of the day. Limited views of the mountains can be seen on the left hand side of the trail.

After hiking roughly 0.6 miles, a radio tower comes into view, which sits just outside the preserve. Carrying on a little while further, you emerge at Gate 4 on Bohlman Road. This is private property, so at this point you can turn around and return to your car, or explore the preserve more by hiking back to the Aquinas Trail, where you can follow that for as long as you wish.
