Salmon Lake is approached by the Salmon Lake Spur heading southwest to the shore of the granite bowl that forms the the lake.

The trail continues winding over one last climb to the intersection with the Loch Leven Trail at the south end of lower Loch Leven. Visitors will find the swimming and camping less crowded at Salmon Lake than at Loch Leven. The fishing is worse though.
