Going up to Mission Peak using the Stanford Avenue entrance for hikers is a benchmark. As soon as you hit the first cattle gate, you'll find yourself already heading uphill and things keep going steadily from there. The trail doesn't have any shade which you'll miss on a hot day. However, it does have a few vista points with benches. The view down to the bay is pretty rewarding.
