This trail consisted of dirt singletrack and is rather exposed. Therefore, the best time to visit is during the winter or spring months when the weather is cool. In warmer weather, start early as it gets hot in mid-day and there's not much tree cover. And bring plenty of water.

Los Huecos Trail is moderately steep going up. It is often used as part of a loop hike with Halls Valley Trail and Canada de Pala Trail. Used this way, it makes a great descent at the end of pleasant hike. The trail heads west from Canada de Pala Trail about 0.3 miles south of the junction with Halls Valley Trail. It winds down the ridgeline all the way to its terminus at the junction with Halls Valley Trail.

We have done this trail a few times and we have seldom seen other hikers on these trails, though we have seen wild boars and coyotes! It's best to hike there with a friend or a group.

On our last trip, there was a layer of fog surrounding the mountains and Grant Lake which presented some of the amazing views. Also the oak trees on the side of the trails further enhance its beauty.
The blue Santa Cruz Mountains are in the distance with Loma Prieta, 3,790 ft., the highest, on the left. Nearer, are the spring green hills of Joseph D. Grant County Park. Seen looking southwest from high on Los Huecos Trail.
