Overview
The James K. Carr Trail is accessed from the parking area off of Crystal Creek Rd. and is a 1.6 mile long ascent to Wiskeytown Falls. <br><br>Once only known to a few loggers and rangers, the Whiskeytown Falls were "rediscovered" in 2004. The trail features steep inclines on a sandy path through decomposing granite hills along a tributary of Crystal Creek. There are several benches along the way for those who need a rest. <br><br>Mixed oak and pine provides shade in many areas, but other stretches are sun exposed. During summer, wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water (the Whiskeytown area is very hot in the summer). The sandy trail is reported to be slippery/icy in the winter. <br><br>The forest closes in again as the trail nears the falls, giving plenty of shade. The falls have several tiers; the upper ones require hiking along slippery rocks with a hand-rail and may be subject to closure depending on weather and trail conditions.<br><br>Nearby amenities: A pit toilet at the parking lot at the trailhead. A bit down the road back to Highway 299 is Crystal Creek Falls, accessible by a short paved walkway.
