This route is a good introductory hike to Mount Shasta if you are just passing by. The trail sticks primarily to old-growth red fir forest but emerges onto open alpine slopes near the Old Ski Bowl Trailhead , the site of a ski area whose chairlift was destroyed by an avalanche in 1978. The route is also historic, the trail blazed in 1884 by Ed Stewart on a G.L.O. (General Lands Office) survey of the mountain. Snow is melting out early here these days, and the best wildflower displays are in mid-spring.
