Los Robles Trail West (Space Mountain)

Overview

Los Robles is a very long trail connecting Rancho Sierra Vista/ Satwiwa National Park in Newbury Park to Foothill Drive in Westlake Village. The eastern half is almost entirely fire road. The western end is entirely singletrack. This description focuses on the western portion.

Los Robles trail west starts from the intersection of Los Robles Trail East and Spring Canyon Trail. The first part of Los Robles Trail West (Space Mountain) heads up a hill popularly known as Space Mountain. Space mountain consists of multiple tight switchbacks not unlike the ride at Disneyland and is widely known in the local mountain biking community. Space Mountain's twists and turns and can be ridden in both directions, but are much more fun going downhill.

Once you get to the top of space mountain the trail straightens out and runs along the northwest side of the mountain, offering great views over Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park.

Then there is a short and treacherous decent to cross a private dirt road. Los Robles trail continues on the other side of the dirt road with a gradual climb. This climb has several rocky obstacles that only the most proficient will be able to ride over.

From the intersection with Rosewood Trail there is a short detour over to a peak with a picnic table. The view at the top is great; most days you can see all the way to the Ocean!

Continuing on Los Robles Trail, it eventually stops following the contours of the hillsides and instead follows some property lines where there is private property on both sides of the trail. This section does not flow at all, and instead has several steep, rocky, rutted, loose climbs and descents. These are challenging to ride down and most riders will have to hike-a-bike on the uphills.

Once past the private property the flow is excellent all the way past the Felton Connector Trail until Potrero Canyon Road. Across the road from the parking lot, the trail continues into Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa National Park.
