Begin from the main trailhead just south of the main switchback. There is adequate parking here and overflow parking just before the switchback.

The first mile of the trail takes hikers near and along the stream bed, so expect only a gentle incline, running water in the rainy months (fall, winter, spring), and a few open fields to catch views of Grass Mountain ahead. There is adequate shade in this area.

You'll begin to gain elevation during next half mile. There are some small splits in the trail, but it seems that all splits are short and re-attach to the main trail. There is still some shade during this section, but it is more limited.

The final mile is very steep with little shade. Most of the elevation gain occurs during the final mile, so make sure to not drink all of your water during the first 2/3rds of the trail. This last part of the trail is often made up of very loose dirt and gravel. Ensure your shoes have good tread and consider using trekking poles for stabilization, especially on the way down!
The trailhead is marked by this large sign.
Third part of the trail
Near the beginning of the trail, hikers continue straight while a horse trail leads to the right. Grass Mountain is visible in the distance.
Enjoy great views near the summit looking back toward the town of Los Olivos with coastal fog visible in the distance.
Looking back toward the trailhead, we can see we're starting to gain elevation above the stream valley.
